Guide to Selecting Discs for Angle Grinders

Types of Discs:

Cutting Disc

A thin, resin-bonded abrasive disc designed primarily for cutting. Used for slicing through metal items such as steel pipes, angle iron, steel plates, and rebar.

✅ Note: Never use a cutting disc for lateral (side) grinding. Applying lateral pressure can easily cause the disc to shatter, leading to serious safety accidents.

Grinding Disc (Depressed Center Wheel)

A thicker, high-strength abrasive disc. Used for grinding down weld seams, removing rust, deburring, and smoothing the surfaces of castings. Not suitable for fine polishing.

Diamond Disc

Embedded with diamond particles, these are designed for cutting or trimming stone, tile, concrete, marble, and cement walls.

❌ Not suitable for grinding steel, as this will rapidly wear away the diamond layer.

Wire Wheel / Wire Cup Brush

Constructed from metal wires, these are used for heavy-duty rust removal, paint stripping, and clearing away weld slag. Ideal for large-area rust removal; exercise caution with applied pressure to prevent wires from breaking and flying off, which could cause injury.

Flap Disc

Composed of overlapping layers of aluminum oxide abrasive flaps, these offer a smooth grinding experience. Used for removing rust, grinding weld seams, and stripping oxide scale. They leave a relatively even surface finish-a middle ground between coarse grinding and fine polishing.

Sponge / Wool Polishing Pad

Used for fine polishing tasks, such as on automotive paint or stainless steel surfaces. Best suited for low-load, low-speed tools; high-power, heavy-duty angle grinders are not recommended for fine polishing, as they can easily overheat and damage the workpiece.

Sandpaper Disc

Available in various grit sizes-the higher the grit number, the finer the abrasive. Used for both coarse and fine sanding of wood, metal, and painted surfaces.
